description : Dr. Ron Zokol graduated from the Faculty of Dentistry at the University of British Columbia in 1974. He started his practice with his father, a certified specialist in Prosthodontics, in Vancouver, Canada where they practiced together for 20 years. In his first 10 years of practice Dr. Zokol attended the University of Washington where he developed his skills in refined gold restorative procedures and then the University of Southern California where he learned the principles of gnathology and occlusion. In 1976, Dr. Zokol was instrumental in starting the first Richard V. Tucker Gold Inlay Study Club, and in 1978 he was asked to mentor his first gold inlay study club. Dr. Zokol continued study club activities in direct gold restorations for total of 30 years. In 1983, the College of Dental Surgeons of British Columbia requested Dr. Zokol stand ready to treat Queen Elizabeth II of England during her tour of British Columbia and other members of the Royal Family in subsequent years. In the second 10 year period, Dr. Zokol mentored clinical study clubs in prosthodontics with specific application to gold restorations and lectured internationally in this field. During this period, he was elected President of the Vancouver and District Dental Society and later was appointed to chair the General Examination Committee of the College of Dental Surgeons of British Columbia. Shortly after completing this chair position, the College of Dental Surgeons of British Columbia appointed him as a Chief Examiner for their board examinations. Although he had been providing the prosthetic phase of implant dentistry, it was in the mid-1980s that Dr. Zokol received his initial training in the surgical phase of oral Implantology. In 1991, Dr. Zokol attended the Misch Implant Institute where he acquired his advanced training in Oral Implantology. In 1992, he was invited, by his colleagues, to mentor a study club in implant surgery which he continued for six years. In 1993, he accepted a position as a clinical surgical instructor for the Misch International Implant Institute in Canada which he continued for over 10 years. Several years later heokol Page 50 of 51 accepted a clinical surgical instructor position for the Institut Canadien D’implantologie (Canadian Implant Institute) in Quebec. In the third decade of practice, Dr. Zokol founded the Pacific Institute for Implant Dentistry and has lectured internationally in the field of implant surgery and implant prosthodontics. In 1996, Dr. Zokol sat the board examinations of the American Board of Oral Implantology and was awarded a Diplomate certificate. His many recognitions include becoming a Fellow of the American Academy of Implant Dentistry, Fellow and Diplomate from the International Congress of Oral Implantologists, Fellow of the Academy of Dentists International, and Fellow of the American College of Dentists. In 1997, Dr. Zokol was recognized by the American Academy of Gold Foil Operators by being presented with the distinguished award of “Clinician of the Year”. In 2001, as director of the Pacific Implant Institute, Dr. Zokol established the first comprehensive generic, hands-on oral implantology continuing education program in the western region of North America. In 2004, the PII oral implantology training program was enhanced and became recognized by many in the field as one of the most comprehensive implant training programs in the world. In 2010, the Pacific Implant Institute expanded into Boca Raton, Florida. In 2008 Dr. Zokol started speaking in Vancouver radio on CFUN 1420am, and, in 2009, was later invited to host a radio show on CISL 650am. In September 2011, the one hour weekly radio show, “Your Dental Health”, continued at CKNW 980am providing guidance and advice to the general public. Dr. Zokol is a faculty member at the University of British Columbia, Faculty of Dentistry, and has participated as a member of the Dean’s Board of Counselors for the dental School for 7 years. In 2012, Dr. Zokol was invited to sit in the External Advisory Board of the College of Engineering, Department of Bioengineering at the University of Maine in Bangor. The purpose of this committee was to assist in establishing modern standards for the enhanced curriculum in Bioengineering and Biomedical Engineering. He continues as a member of this committee to this day.okol Page 51 of 51. In 2009, Dr. Zokol accepted the responsibility of being the Implant Section Editor for the Canadian Journal of Restorative Dentistry and Prosthodontics. Dr. Zokol is proud to have been the recipient of the Distinguished Service award from the British Columbia Dental Association in 2007, and the Paul Rondeau Memorial Humanitarian Award from the Vancouver and District Dental Society in 2016. In 2001, Dr. Zokol officially limited his practice to a referral practice for advanced surgical and prosthetic rehabilitation. In 2014, Dr. Bobby Birdi, a dual board certified specialist in Prosthodontics and Periodontics became his partner in the Pacific Implant Institute. Having been in private practice from 1974 to 2014, he now continues to practice at BC Perio in Vancouver, Canada with a team of Periodontists providing services in advanced surgical and prosthetic rehabilitation.
